I mean, I was trying to honor the legacy of all these things. If I could do it with unlimited time and unlimited budget, of course. MPC took a loss on the movie, you know, so they should be celebrated. And then half of that budget is for animation. Our animation budget was maybe, I would say an eighth of what like a Pixar or Disney Animation movie would be. Whether you could tell or not, but just like the puppet looks so great and there was no puppet on set. There’s stuff in there that maybe you knew was CG, but maybe you didn’t know. I want to preface this by being like MPC is incredible. Did you ever think of just doing it in classic cel animation. The director actually wanted to do the original 2D animation, it was just a time and budget issue.Ĭhip is supposed to be 2D but he’s rendered in 3D. I mean it's a good movie, I definitely enjoyed it, but the whole time I'm watching Chip and Peter Pan with their choppy frame rate trying to pretend they're hand drawn, and I'm thinking about how Roger Rabbit "knocked the lamp" and getting bummed. Even Warner Brothers cheaped out by making the Looney Tunes CGI for most of the movie in Space Jam 2. I don't think we'll ever get something as well done as Roger Rabbit again. It takes so much to get studios to invest in this kind of animation anymore.

It just seems like this could have been a lot more impressive with a better budget and Disney got their A-list animation team to break out the pencils and actually draw some frames. The inauthenticity of it really flies in the face of what it feels like they wanted to accomplish.

The fact Chip is actually a 3D model with cell shaded skin, trying to look like classic 2D animation, is so patently obvious that it kind of kills the vibe a bit. and I'd have liked it a lot more if they actually were hand drawn animation. The movie is meant to be something of an animation showcase, it's very much in the vein of Roger Rabbit, and it's explicitly describing certain characters as being handrawn 2D animation.

Which is something that was constantly popping into my head while watching the Chip and Dale movie OP is referencing. Sucks he doesn't make much stuff anymore. KaptainKristian made this excellent, short little video about Roger Rabbit that breaks it down. Also, I said it once and I'll say it again, Jessica Rabbit is the hottest toon on the planet. What else can I say, except that I am really glad Disney let Who Framed Roger Rabbit remain a one movie series. It is also a great detective Noir story, even if the mystery of how did it is extremely forgettable, but I feel the film makes up for it with great pacing, animation, characters, chemistry between the two leads, music, comedy, and Story. The CGI, and how they blended the cartoons into the real world as well as how they interact with real people and vice versa still holds up extremely well, it can be enjoyed by both kids and adults, with the animated Crossover stuff for kids and the Darker Detective Noir elements for Adults, the fact they were able to make this happen at all the way they did in the first place being impressive in of itself, like seriously, who would've thought in a million years we would see Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny on screen together, or Donald and Daffy Duck.Īlso Eddie Valiant and Roger Rabbit are just great characters, Roger being crazy and silly, yet still so lovable and Naive, and apparently a ladies Rabbit because how the hell else did that dude manage to pick up someone like Jessica, Jesus Christ (also Jessica is the hottest toon on the planet) and not to mention, he's also really funny, and Valiant while he is a jerk, is also still relatable as he is sort of a reflection of us as adults, and how we become cyncial and bitter and lose that hopeful optimistic side, but like Eddie we are able to get it back, speaking of which, he also has a great character arc. In fact, I mean it when I say it is the best live action/animated Hybrid film ever made, let's be real here. So tonight in preparation for that New Chip N' Dale movie, I decided to rewatch another Live Action/animated hybrid (in fact, arguably the best one), Who Framed Roger Rabbit starring the Late and Great Bob Hoskins, AKA Happytime Murders but done right, and.well, I'm not going to spend too long on this because, it still holds up extremely well.
